UN Secretary-General visits Cyprus to facilitate renewed talks

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Cyprus on July 29, 2026, to engage in separate meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. Guterres emphasized that the UN is prepared to support efforts for a Cyprus settlement but will not impose a solution, stating that the primary responsibility for the process rests with the two Cypriot communities and the guarantor powers.

Following the meetings, plans were established to convene a new 5+1 conference. The current diplomatic focus has shifted toward the registration of convergences achieved in previous negotiations, specifically those established up to the Crans-Montana talks. This documentation process will be carried out by UN experts, covering both internal and external aspects of the problem. Negotiators from both sides are expected to resume meetings in August to coordinate these efforts.

While the atmosphere is cautiously positive, concerns remain regarding the methodology, the core essence of the Cyprus issue, and the implementation of confidence-building measures (CBMs), including the opening of new crossing points. Turkish Cypriot political reactions vary, with some groups supporting the UN-led road map, while others, like Kudret Ozersay, argue that no tangible progress has been achieved on key issues. The geopolitical situation in the Middle East was also cited by Guterres as a factor increasing the urgency for a stable settlement.
