Workplace accident index in Cyprus shows long-term decline

The Department of Labour Inspection of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance in Cyprus released an analysis on July 29, 2026, revealing a sustained decline in workplace accidents. The national accident index has decreased by 55.3% since 2017, marking the eighth consecutive year of improvement, with a 7.2% reduction recorded in 2025 compared to 2024.

Significant annual decreases in 2025 were noted in the wholesale and retail trade sectors (15.2%), transport and storage (8.8%), and hotels and restaurants (7.3%). While long-term trends from 2019 show a substantial decline of 42.5% in construction and 39.6% in manufacturing, these sectors remain the most dangerous. Specifically, the construction sector accounted for 18% of all workplace accidents in 2025, up from 15.3% in 2024, as the sector recorded a 3.9% increase in its accident index over the previous year. Similarly, manufacturing saw an 11.7% increase compared to 2024, with falls identified as the most frequent cause of accidents across all sectors.

The findings are attributed to collective efforts aimed at enhancing prevention and occupational safety protocols. Despite the overall downward trajectory since 2017, the recent uptick in construction and manufacturing accident indices highlights ongoing challenges in high-risk industries.
