UN official warns of rapid deterioration in West Bank violence

United Nations officials have expressed grave concern over the rapidly worsening situation in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, citing a significant escalation in violence. Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, reported that attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities, homes, and places of worship have continued at an alarming rate over the past week, resulting in civilian deaths, displacement, and material damage. He urged Israel to take immediate action to hold perpetrators accountable while calling on Palestinians to condemn the cycle of violence.

According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, eight Palestinians, including a child, and two Israeli soldiers have been killed in the territory since late last week. This includes four deaths on the Palestinian side and two on the Israeli side resulting from clashes in the village of Tel last Friday, which led to a subsequent Israeli military raid. The UN reiterated that third-party states must act to end the occupation, noting that this escalation occurs two years after the International Court of Justice declared the Israeli occupation of the West Bank illegal. UN representatives emphasize that the combination of settler violence, land appropriation, and the construction of military structures has reached unprecedented levels, further destabilizing the region.
