Yeroskipou municipality to hold peaceful protest against central government policies

The Municipal Council of Yeroskipou has announced a three-hour peaceful protest scheduled for August 3, 2026. The demonstration serves as a formal reaction to what local officials describe as state interference in the principles of local government, specifically targeting the administrative and financial autonomy of municipalities.

Local authorities argue that the central government has failed to provide sufficient and fair funding. Instead of strengthening municipal support, the state is allegedly attempting to shift the economic burden onto municipalities and, by extension, the local residents. Officials expressed strong opposition to implicit government pressure to increase municipal fees and taxes, stating that these costs should not be passed down to citizens due to inadequate state support.

The protest, which aligns with previous announcements made by the Union of Municipalities, is intended to highlight the damage caused to institutional independence by current state policies and omissions. There are currently no indications of further escalation beyond the planned three-hour action.
