Rare 1974 color film reveals life in Cyprus before the invasion

A rare 8mm color film recorded in April 1974 has been released by the Aylon Film Archives, providing a historical perspective of Cyprus just months before the coup and subsequent Turkish invasion. The footage was captured by 29-year-old Nikos Athanasoglou during a trip with his partner, who was of Cypriot descent.

The video begins at Athens’ Hellenikon Airport and transitions to Nicosia, where it documents everyday life, local architecture, and landmarks such as the Hadjigeorgakis Kornesios Mansion, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Hilton Nicosia. The film also showcases scenes from Makarios Avenue, displaying a vibrant capital city oblivious to the upcoming political transformation.

Continuing the journey, the camera documented areas that would shortly fall under Turkish control, including Bellapais, the Monastery of Apostle Barnabas, and the ancient city of Salamis. The footage also features historical sights in Famagusta, including the Othello Tower and scenes from the Varosha district before it was abandoned following the events of August 1974.
