UN Secretary-General concludes visit to Cyprus amid mixed reactions

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concluded a visit to Cyprus on July 29, 2026, which included a trilateral meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The visit featured high-level UN officials, including Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, with Guterres holding separate meetings in both the north and south of Nicosia to engage with both leaderships.

Tufan Erhurman characterized the visit as positive and important, stating that the engagement of such a high-level delegation offered him newfound hope for a resolution to the long-standing Cyprus problem. He emphasized that the meetings served to reiterate the position of two equal leaders under the United Nations umbrella.

Conversely, Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement noting that there is currently no common ground for a solution. While expressing appreciation for Guterres' efforts, the ministry urged focus on specific areas of cooperation established in 2025 to build trust. Turkey further criticized the Greek Cypriot side, describing its stance as "intransigent" and asserting that previous solution models from past decades have been exhausted. No specific outcomes were announced following the conclusion of the talks, leaving the future of the peace process reliant on building further trust through smaller-scale cooperation.
