UN Secretary-General Guterres concludes visit to Cyprus as trilateral meetings yield mixed results

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concluded his visit to Cyprus on July 29, 2026, following a series of high-level meetings with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The visit included separate meetings in both the north and south of Nicosia, which Erhurman described as an important reaffirmation of the equal status of the two leaders under the UN umbrella. High-level UN officials, including Rosemary DiCarlo and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, accompanied the Secretary-General.

During the trilateral discussions, Guterres proposed a compromise for opening new crossing points, specifically the simultaneous opening of the Mia Milia and Athienou crossings. While President Christodoulides expressed agreement with the proposal, Erhurman rejected the specific terms put forward by the UN. Despite the lack of a formal breakthrough on the Cyprus problem, Erhurman stated he is more hopeful for a solution process, noting that a roadmap may be emerging. He also proposed regular weekly meetings with Christodoulides to maintain momentum.

Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Guterres' efforts but maintained that there is no common ground for a solution. Ankara criticized the Greek Cypriot side’s stance and dismissed past negotiation models as exhausted, calling for a focus on specific cooperation areas established in the 2025 UN-led process. The status of the island remains subject to ongoing diplomatic dialogue, with further efforts expected to facilitate consensus on confidence-building measures.
