UN Secretary-General outlines roadmap for future Cyprus talks

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concluded a two-day visit to Cyprus on July 30, 2026, where he held intensive discussions with leaders, including President Nikos Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman. Guterres announced the intention to convene a new expanded 5+1 meeting to discuss the Cyprus issue, though no specific date was set. The Secretary-General emphasized that this meeting will only occur after adequate preparation regarding confidence-building measures, methodology, and the substance of the negotiations to ensure the process yields concrete results.

The Cypriot government has reacted positively, expressing alignment with the UN's approach. While the Greek Cypriot side advocates for the earliest possible convening of the conference, Turkish officials, including those from the Turkish Ministry of Defense, continue to insist on a two-state solution based on sovereign equality as the only viable path. The EU’s newly appointed special envoy for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto, has also visited Nicosia to coordinate next steps. As of early August 2026, ongoing diplomatic efforts are focused on internal preparations and building the necessary consensus among the involved parties to avoid repeating previous deadlocks.
