Annita Demetriou comments on the Cyprus issue and upcoming UN meeting

On July 29, 2026, the President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, issued a statement regarding the recent UN Secretary-General’s visit to Cyprus. While acknowledging that no specific date has been set for a new enlarged 5+1 meeting, she emphasized that the UN’s intention to convene such a meeting keeps the negotiation process active. Demetriou stressed that existing convergences remain the foundation for future progress and called for seriousness and focus from all involved parties to achieve the expected results within the UN framework.

Following the statement, Demetriou held a series of briefings in Nicosia with officials from occupied municipalities, including former Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides and negotiator Panagiotis Dimitriou, to discuss these developments. Furthermore, DISY highlighted the upcoming visit of European Commission Special Envoy Raffaele Fitto, viewing it as an opportunity for better coordination. The party maintains that EU involvement is crucial and asserts that progress in EU-Turkey relations must be linked to tangible advancements in the Cyprus negotiations, demanding that Turkey show genuine political will to resume talks.
