Fatal wildfires rage across Crete and multiple Greek islands

Devastating wildfires continue to ravage areas of Crete, specifically in the Rethymno region, causing the deaths of two firefighters on July 29, 2026. The victims, 25-year-old Pantelis Diamantakis and 58-year-old Manolis Stratidakis, were overcome by smoke while attempting to contain a blaze in low vegetation. A third firefighter, Konstantinos Laimodetis, also died from natural causes while battling a separate fire in Gytheio. The situation in Rethymno remains critical as gale-force winds reaching 10 Beaufort have grounded aerial assets and hindered ground efforts, resulting in over 80% of the historic Preveli palm forest being destroyed.

Authorities have coordinated mass evacuations, including the sea rescue of 50 individuals near Preveli. New fire fronts, such as the one in Asomatos, have prompted repeated 112 emergency alerts and the deployment of nearly 300 firefighters in Crete alone. Additional fires have broken out on the islands of Paros, Andros, and Kalymnos. Despite the heroic efforts of emergency crews, officials warn that extreme weather conditions are expected to persist, keeping emergency forces on high alert as they struggle to contain the multiple fronts affecting various regions across Greece.
