Two firefighters die in wildfire near Rethymno

Two firefighters have lost their lives while battling a major wildfire in the area of Nea Krya Vrysi, near Rethymno, Crete. The victims, aged 23 and 27, became trapped in their vehicle in the Sahtouria region on July 29, 2026. While some reports suggest they were seasonal or volunteer firefighters, other sources indicate a mix of one permanent and one seasonal worker. They reportedly lost their orientation due to thick smoke before being overcome by the flames.

The wildfire, which began Wednesday afternoon, has been fueled by strong winds, forcing the evacuation of five settlements. A 112 emergency alert was issued around 15:30, urging residents of Sahtouria and Melampes to relocate toward Agia Galini. Suppression efforts involve over 110 to 125 firefighters, including six specialized forestry units, 27 vehicles, four helicopters, and four aircraft. Municipal equipment and water tankers are also assisting ground crews in the operation to contain the multiple fronts of the fire. Authorities continue to battle the blaze as rescue and containment operations remain ongoing.
