Cyprus Health Insurance Organization lowers patient co-payment for Eliquis

Starting August 1, 2026, beneficiaries of the Cyprus General Healthcare System (GeSY) will see a significant reduction in the co-payment (Co-payment II) required for the anticoagulant medication Eliquis. Following an agreement between the Health Insurance Organization (HIO) and the product's Marketing Authorization Holder, the cost per package will drop to €8, down from the €22 that many patients have been paying in recent months.

The issue arose in February 2026, when a re-pricing of pharmaceutical products by the Ministry of Health's Pharmaceutical Services caused the co-payment for Eliquis to increase significantly. The current adjustment affects approximately 10,000 patients who rely on this oral anticoagulant for the prevention and treatment of thromboses and strokes. Advocacy groups and the HIO collaborated to resolve the financial burden placed on these users.

Looking ahead, the HIO announced that an additional, cost-free alternative will become available in November 2026. A generic version of the anticoagulant is expected to be integrated into the GeSY, allowing patients to choose a treatment option with zero co-payment.
