Woman gives birth in taxi in central Athens

On July 29, 2026, a pregnant woman gave birth to a baby in the backseat of a taxi in central Athens while en route to the Alexandra Hospital. The driver, identified as Panagiotis, had picked up the foreign passenger in the Kato Patisia area and realized shortly after departing that she was in active labor. Despite a language barrier, he recognized the urgency of the situation and contacted the Hellenic Police for assistance.

Before the taxi could reach the hospital, the woman delivered the child in the backseat. With the support of a police patrol car and members of the DIAS motorcycle unit, the taxi reached the medical facility rapidly.
