FIFA plans to sell equity in commercial subsidiary sparking backlash
FIFA has announced plans to establish a $20 billion subsidiary, named FIFA Forward Enterprise, to manage commercial operations and events. The governing body intends to offer up to 20% of the entity to private investors, aiming to raise approximately $4.2 billion. This proposal follows the completion of the 48-team World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which stands as the largest tournament in the organization's history.
The initiative has triggered significant opposition from regional confederations and UEFA. UEFA is reportedly convening an emergency meeting with its 55 member associations to determine a response, condemning the move as selling the "soul" of the sport. Similarly, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) criticized the lack of official communication, stating they were blindsided by the announcement and were only informed through media reports. These bodies have raised serious concerns regarding the lack of due process in FIFA's decision-making.
