Diplomatic activity intensifies in Cyprus following UN Secretary-General's visit

Following the visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Cyprus, diplomatic efforts to restart peace negotiations have intensified. While a formal agreement for an informal five-party conference remains pending, President Nikos Christodoulides maintains that the window of opportunity for talks has not closed, citing Guterres' commitment to continue mediation and the consensus of guarantor powers regarding a new conference.

In this context, the EU's newly appointed Special Representative for the Cyprus problem and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Raffaele Fitto, is scheduled to visit Nicosia on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Fitto is expected to meet with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Friday. This visit is intended to support the UN-led process, with Fitto working in close coordination with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín. President Christodoulides has convened the National Council for August 3 to brief political leaders on these developments and future strategy.

Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis noted that the EU possesses the tools and incentives necessary to address current challenges, while the President described the recent international engagement as the result of a systematic strategic effort initiated by his government since March 2023.
