Diplomatic momentum for Cyprus issue following Guterres visit

Following a recent visit to Cyprus by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, diplomatic efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue have intensified. During his stay, Guterres announced plans to convene a new "5+1" informal meeting to discuss the island’s future. President Nikos Christodoulides attributed this renewed momentum to a systematic strategy initiated by his government in March 2023 and emphasized that the UN will consult with both sides and guarantor nations to prepare for the summit.

In support of these efforts, Raffaele Fitto, the European Commission’s newly appointed special representative for the Cyprus issue and Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, arrived in Nicosia on July 30, 2026. Fitto is scheduled to meet with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman on Friday. His mission is to coordinate closely with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, María Ángela Holguín, to facilitate the reunification process.

Looking ahead, President Christodoulides has convened the National Council for Monday, August 3, 2026, to review these developments and align national strategy. The European Commission has officially confirmed its readiness to play an active role in the settlement process, utilizing all available tools to support a solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
