Court case proceeds one year after fatal Aglantzia car crash

A year has passed since a fatal traffic accident occurred on Larnakos Avenue in Aglantzia, Cyprus, which claimed the life of 20-year-old Kyriakos Antoniou. The collision took place around 01:20 on July 29, 2025, when the vehicle driven by Antoniou was struck by a car operated by a 24-year-old driver, who was accompanied by a 23-year-old passenger. The impact was so severe that Antoniou's vehicle veered off the road and collided with a traffic light pole.

Following a lengthy investigation and multiple reviews by the Legal Service, which had requested additional evidence last November, authorities have authorized the filing of charges against the 24-year-old driver. He is accused of traffic offenses related to causing a fatal road collision. The case is scheduled to be heard in court on September 24.

In light of this tragedy, concerns regarding the safety of Larnakos Avenue have been raised by local officials. Member of Parliament Andreas Konstantinou has registered a formal request with the Parliamentary Committee on Transport to address the high speeds at which motorists travel on this road during nighttime hours, seeking interventions from Public Works and local authorities to improve traffic safety.
