President Christodoulides emphasizes progress in Cyprus peace talks

President Nikos Christodoulides declared on Wednesday that the recent statement by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres regarding Cyprus is unambiguous and open to only one interpretation. Following meetings between Guterres, Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, the Secretary General announced that an enlarged meeting on the Cyprus problem will be convened once sufficient progress is achieved on confidence-building measures, methodology, and substantive issues. This consensus involves the two sides and the three guarantor powers: Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

Christodoulides highlighted that international engagement has intensified, with EU special envoy for Cyprus Raffaele Fitto scheduled to visit the island this coming Friday. The president credited this diplomatic activity to his administration's strategic focus, which has led to increased interest from both the UN and the EU. He noted that the appointment of Fitto by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen serves as evidence that the Cyprus problem is increasingly recognized as a European issue.
