Energy market association meets with transmission operator to discuss electricity costs

On Wednesday, July 29, representatives from the Electricity Market Association (SAH) and the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSM) held a meeting to discuss measures to improve the efficiency of the competitive electricity market and reduce energy costs for households and businesses.

The meeting was led by SAH President Giorgos Chrysochos and the TSM's Director of Market Operations, Dr. Konstantinos Varnavas. During the session, the SAH presented formal proposals regarding matters under the TSM's jurisdiction. Both parties exchanged views on operational practices aimed at ensuring the smooth functioning of the electricity sector. A key focus was placed on maintaining a continuous technical dialogue to identify challenges and promote realistic solutions for the country's electrical grid.

Cyprus began opening its energy market to private companies in October 2025. While the transition was intended to create a free market allowing producers, suppliers, and consumers greater flexibility, concerns regarding the actual impact on consumer electricity bills remain. Both organizations emphasized their commitment to ongoing cooperation to foster transparency, competition, and a more effective energy system for all stakeholders.
