Spanish authorities allow thousands to return home as wildfires stabilize

Spanish authorities have officially lifted evacuation orders for thousands of residents in the Avila province and two communities in the Madrid region, following a significant improvement in weather conditions. By July 30, officials reported that the wildfires, which have scorched over 250,000 acres, are largely stabilized with minimal active flames remaining. More than 24,000 people had already returned to their homes by July 29, with an additional 1,500 allowed to return shortly thereafter. Despite the progress, approximately 1,000 residents remained displaced as of July 30.

While the situation has improved, regional officials maintain a state of high alert. The ongoing heatwave poses a significant risk of reigniting the fires, prompting authorities to focus on maintaining perimeter stability and monitoring for potential new flare-ups. Residents are advised that while the immediate danger has decreased, the landscape in some areas remains severely damaged. Emergency services continue to cool down hot zones to ensure a safe transition for those returning to their communities.
