Cyprus government approves financial grants for nursing and midwifery students

On July 30, 2026, the Cypriot Cabinet approved a new financial aid program for undergraduate nursing and midwifery students to address a critical shortage of approximately 600 healthcare professionals. Announced by Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides, the initiative provides annual grants to students enrolled in recognized higher education institutions in Cyprus, regardless of their financial status. The program, which begins in the 2026-2027 academic year, covers both new and existing students, offering €1,000 for the first year, €1,250 for the second, €1,500 for the third, and €2,000 for the fourth year.

To qualify, students must be permanent residents of the Republic of Cyprus and commit to working in the local healthcare system for at least two years upon graduation. This measure is part of a broader government strategy to boost domestic human resources, as current staffing gaps have hindered the implementation of essential healthcare policies, including community nursing and palliative care services. Additionally, the Ministry of Health clarified that young men may complete their nursing studies before fulfilling their compulsory military service, during which their professional qualifications may be utilized. Unions, including the Cyprus Union of Nursing Staff (Oyyk-Sek) and the Pan-Cyprian Nursing Union (PASYNO), have expressed strong support for the scheme as a long-awaited solution to the chronic staffing crisis.
