Cyprus government introduces financial grants for nursing and midwifery students

On July 30, 2026, the Cypriot Council of Ministers approved a new financial support program for undergraduate students of nursing and midwifery to address a chronic labor shortage estimated at approximately 600 professionals. Announced by Health Minister Neofytos Charalambidis, the initiative aims to attract more students to these fields and ensure long-term staffing for public healthcare facilities.

The program, effective from the 2026-2027 academic year, provides annual grants to all permanent residents of Cyprus enrolled in recognized local programs, regardless of income. The financial assistance is structured on a sliding scale: €1,000 for the first year, €1,250 for the second, €1,500 for the third, and €2,000 for the fourth year. A primary condition for receiving these funds is a binding commitment from the students to work in the nursing profession within Cyprus for at least two years following graduation.

The current shortage has significantly impacted the healthcare system, leaving key legislation regarding community nursing, palliative care, and the operation of rehabilitation centers effectively inactive. The Cyprus Patients' Association (OSAK) welcomed the decision, acknowledging that the move is essential to resolve ongoing staffing issues and to improve the quality of patient care. The program will apply to both new and current students.
