Cyprus issues heatwave warnings as wildfire risk remains at red alert

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a series of yellow weather warnings as the island experiences a persistent heatwave. Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C in inland areas on July 31 and climb further to approximately 41°C on August 1. These warnings are specifically active between 14:00 and 16:30 on both days, urging the public to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat and avoid prolonged sun exposure.

Simultaneously, the Department of Forests has maintained a 'red alert' level for the risk of forest fires throughout the region. This high-risk status, which continues through the weekend, has prompted authorities to issue urgent appeals for maximum public vigilance. Any activities that could potentially trigger a wildfire are strictly prohibited under national law, with heavy penalties in place for offenders. Emergency services, including the Department of Forests (1407) and the Fire Service (112), remain on high standby to respond to any incidents.

While the current weather remains predominantly sunny and clear, temperatures are expected to remain significantly above average seasonal values for the coming days, with no significant decline forecasted until the start of the next week.
