Cyprus remains on high alert amid heatwave and series of suspicious fires

Cyprus has been under a yellow weather warning due to an intense heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 41°C in central regions. The persistent high temperatures, expected to remain above seasonal averages through early next week, have prompted authorities to declare a state of 'red alert' for forest fires, which remains in effect through August 3.

On August 1, emergency services responded to a series of incidents, including five sequential forest fires between Prodromi and Arodies in Paphos, and further blazes near Meniko and Ergates. While the Meniko and Ergates fires were brought under control, officials are investigating suspicious activity reported by citizens in Oroklini and other locations. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis confirmed that investigations into potential arson are ongoing, with all evidence handed over to the police.

The Civil Defence and Fire Brigade, supported by the Forestry Department and volunteer groups, are maintaining increased patrols and aerial surveillance using drones and firefighting aircraft. Authorities strongly urge the public to remain vigilant, strictly avoid activities that could ignite fires, and report any suspicious behavior immediately to emergency hotlines 112 or 1407.
