Court hearings continue for fathers in two separate child fatality cases in Cyprus

Two separate legal cases involving the tragic deaths of children are currently moving through the Cypriot court system. In the first case, a 30-year-old father appeared before the Sovereign Base Areas Court in Dhekelia regarding the June 28 death of his two sons, aged 8 and 10, found in a car in Xylophagou. A hearing to discuss his request for release on bail and permission to travel to Bulgaria for the children's funeral was adjourned until July 31, with a trial date set for September 22. The defence has challenged expert findings regarding the vehicle's locking system.

In a separate case, a 37-year-old British father appeared before the Paphos District Court on July 31, facing charges of causing death through reckless or dangerous acts after his 3-year-old son fell from a hotel balcony in Chlorakas on July 12. The defendant, who was released on bail under strict conditions including a 20,000 euro deposit, has hired new legal counsel. His trial proceedings were adjourned until August 3, when he is expected to enter a plea and present a request to temporarily lift travel restrictions to attend his son's funeral in the United Kingdom. Toxicology tests have reportedly confirmed the presence of alcohol in the father's system at the time of the incident.
