Court hearings proceed for two separate child death cases in Cyprus

Two distinct court proceedings concerning the tragic deaths of children are currently unfolding in Cyprus. In the first case, the Paphos District Court on July 31 began the trial of a 37-year-old British father charged with causing death by reckless or negligent acts following the fall of his three-year-old son from a hotel balcony in Chlorakas on July 12. The father has been released on bail under strict conditions, including a €20,000 cash deposit and travel restrictions. The defense has requested a temporary lifting of these conditions to allow the father to attend his son’s funeral in the United Kingdom, with a decision expected at the next hearing on August 3.

Simultaneously, the Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) Court is reviewing the case of a 30-year-old Bulgarian father whose two children, aged 8 and 10, were found dead in a car in Xylofagou on June 28. A defense lawyer contested expert findings regarding the vehicle's locking mechanism, noting that CCTV footage shows one child entering and exiting the car. The court has reserved its decision on the father’s request for bail and permission to travel to Bulgaria to bury his children. The bodies remain at the SBA pending a final court ruling, with the Cypriot government covering transport costs.
