Limassol port transporters end strike after X-ray scanner relocation

Trailer transporters at the Limassol port in Cyprus initiated a spontaneous work stoppage on Thursday, July 30, 2026. The industrial action was triggered by the Customs Department's decision to relocate a container X-ray diagnostic machine to a position near the entrance of the Eurogate Container Terminal. Transporters expressed significant health concerns, fearing that the radiation from the device at this frequently traversed location posed a carcinogenic risk, despite prior assurances from authorities that there was no cause for alarm.

Following negotiations, the dispute was resolved on Friday, July 31, when the Customs Department agreed to move the equipment to a new, non-objectionable site. According to Kyriakos Moustakas, the Central Organizational Secretary of POVEK, the transport workers returned to their duties on Friday afternoon after receiving official commitments from the Customs Department. The authorities have pledged that the diagnostic system will be reinstalled and operational in a new, safer location within the coming week.
