Severe storms and winds leave five dead in Brazil

Violent winds reaching speeds of 124 km/h swept through parts of Brazil on July 30, 2026, resulting in five fatalities and significant infrastructure damage. The severe weather caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of walls, the uprooting of scaffolding, and the displacement of water tanks from rooftops.

Two victims died in the Santa Teresa district of Rio de Janeiro after being crushed by a collapsing wall, a moment captured by security cameras. Two other individuals were killed by falling trees—one pedestrian and one driver inside a vehicle—while the fifth victim was a fisherman whose boat capsized in the intense winds. Beachgoers also reported scenes of panic as they struggled to maintain their footing during the storm.

Meteorologists consulted by Globo attributed the extreme weather to a cold front advancing across central and southern Brazil. The instability intensified when this system collided with a warm, humid air mass, creating optimal conditions for the dangerous storm development.
