Heatwave causes spike in hospital admissions across Cyprus

Public hospitals across Cyprus are reporting an increase in patient flow and admissions due to the ongoing heatwave, according to Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the State Health Services Organization (OKYPY). The rise in hospital visits is attributed to a combination of high temperatures, internal population movement toward coastal areas, and increased tourist activity.

Health officials report various heat-related incidents, including cases of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and minor injuries such as sprains or limb trauma sustained during recreational activities at sea or in mountainous regions. Furthermore, there is a seasonal spike in gastroenteritis cases, which Charilaou notes is often linked to the improper storage and spoilage of food and beverages during high temperatures.

While the situation is managed by the Emergency Departments (TAEP), authorities emphasize the importance of food safety and caution during outdoor activities. No cases of heatstroke have been reported thus far, though medical facilities remain on high alert due to the sustained weather conditions.
