Heatwave leads to increased hospital visits in Cyprus

Public hospitals across Cyprus have reported a significant increase in patient traffic at Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments due to an ongoing heatwave. Charalambos Charilaou, spokesman for the state health services organisation (Okypy), confirmed on July 30, 2026, that the surge is linked to high temperatures, internal population movement toward coastal regions, and increased tourist activity.

The reported medical issues include cases of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and various minor injuries sustained during outdoor activities at beaches or in mountain areas. Additionally, medical staff are treating a rise in gastroenteritis cases, which officials attribute to the consumption of food spoiled by improper storage during high summer temperatures. While patients of all ages are affected, Okypy identified children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions as the most vulnerable groups.

Health authorities advise the public to remain in cool, shaded environments during peak temperature hours to mitigate health risks. While no specific end date for the heatwave was mentioned, the public healthcare system continues to monitor the influx of patients as the summer season progresses.
