Round table in Nicosia discusses fair employment for migrant workers

On Thursday, a round table discussion titled "Promoting fair employment for migrant labor in Cyprus" was held at the Journalists' House in Nicosia. The event, organized in observance of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, focused on the challenges faced by foreign workers in accessing legal representation and labor protections.

During the second panel session, experts including lawyer Eleni Charalambous and representatives from the trade unions SEK and PEO highlighted the persistent barriers migrants face in exercising their rights. Participants argued that Cyprus already possesses the necessary legislative framework but struggles with effective implementation. The discourse emphasized the need for better information dissemination, stricter enforcement of labor laws, and simplified access to justice mechanisms for workers from third countries.

The discussion served as a platform to address practical obstacles, such as the difficulty in navigating bureaucratic systems and seeking legal redress. The experts concluded that while the laws are in place, the authorities must improve the practical application of these protections to ensure that migrant workers are not exploited and can fully access the justice system.
