Averof Neofytou criticizes the focus on confidence-building measures in the Cyprus issue

Former DISY leader Averof Neofytou has expressed significant concern regarding recent developments in the Cyprus negotiations following the visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Neofytou argues that while the Secretary-General initially emphasized a comprehensive solution, the post-visit discourse has retreated toward discussing Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) and border crossings. He labels this shift as a regression, describing it as a tactic used by those seeking to delay substantive progress, noting that such focus serves only those who prefer procrastination over meaningful dialogue.

Neofytou urges both communities to move beyond these secondary issues and focus on the substantive work requested by the UN Secretary-General. He contends that instead of preparing for August holidays, the negotiating teams should engage in an intensive dialogue to define the methodology and principles for a solution. According to Neofytou, Guterres has clearly communicated that convening a 5+1 summit is contingent upon the progress made in these core areas. Furthermore, Neofytou criticized local political figures for engaging in partisan maneuvers and early electioneering, arguing that these actions distract from the critical task of resuming high-level talks as early as this autumn.
