Averof Neophytou criticizes focus on confidence building measures in Cyprus talks

Former Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Averof Neophytou expressed negative assessments regarding recent developments in the Cyprus issue on July 30, 2026. He argued that the current trajectory lacks necessary progress in both process and substance, which is essential to creating conditions for resuming negotiations and convening a 5+1 level conference.

Neophytou criticized the shift in discourse from a comprehensive solution—initially emphasized by the UN Secretary-General upon his arrival in Cyprus—back to discussions surrounding checkpoints and Confidence Building Measures (CBMs). He characterized this pivot as a regression, asserting that CBMs are primarily utilized by parties seeking to delay substantive progress. Furthermore, he condemned internal political factions for engaging in what he termed "old-school political games" instead of focusing on the broader goal of restarting meaningful talks.

Despite limited expectations for a five-party conference in the coming months, Neophytou stressed that this must remain the primary focus of all stakeholders. He suggested that the time spent debating minor measures effectively serves the interests of those intentionally stalling the peace process.
