Fire at illegal landfill in Arsos village, Limassol

A fire broke out on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at an illegal landfill near the village of Arsos in the Limassol district. The blaze, which was first reported around midday, spread from the dump site to surrounding areas, ultimately consuming approximately five hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, waste materials, and wooden pallets. Four aerial assets, eight fire trucks from Limassol, and six vehicles from the Forestry Department were deployed to combat the flames. The operation was also supported by volunteer groups and private water tankers.

The fire was brought under control by 18:19 local time after extensive efforts. Local community leader Giannakis Giannaki suggested that the incident might be of malicious origin, noting that clothing items and boxes had been illegally dumped in the area shortly before the fire started. These items, marked with specific logos, were recovered and handed over to the police for investigation. Although no direct link to the fire has been established, authorities are monitoring the situation as they investigate the causes and potential suspects.
