Nikos Flourentzos, former AKEL member and MP, dies at 103

Nikos Flourentzos, a historical figure of the Cypriot Left and former AKEL member of parliament, passed away on July 30, 2026, at the age of 103. The political party announced his death, honoring his long-standing service to the public, the party, and the city of Famagusta.

Flourentzos began his political career in the late 1940s as the AKEL District Secretary for Famagusta. He served as a municipal councilor in Famagusta for 15 years, working alongside mayors Adam Adamantos and Andreas Pougiouros. His career included roles as the Executive Secretary of the Famagusta Shopkeepers' Association and as a correspondent for the newspaper Dimokratis. Notably, he was involved in organizing solidarity efforts for Jewish refugees held in British colonial camps in Cyprus following World War II.

Following the 1974 conflict, Flourentzos settled in Limassol, where he remained active in refugee relief efforts. He served as an AKEL member of parliament from 1985 to 1991. The party praised his contributions, describing him as a dedicated figure whose legacy remains tied to the history and people of Famagusta.
