Nikos Flourentzos, former AKEL member and MP, passes away at 103

Nikos Flourentzos, a prominent figure in the Cypriot Left and a former Member of Parliament for the AKEL party, died on July 30, 2026, at the age of 103. The party announced his passing, honoring his decades of service to the public and his significant contributions to the social and political life of Cyprus.

Flourentzos's political career began in the late 1940s when he was appointed District Secretary of AKEL in Famagusta. He served for 15 years as a municipal councilor in the city of Famagusta, working closely with mayors Adam Adamantos and Andreas Pougiouros. His legacy includes organizing solidarity efforts for Jewish refugees held in British colonial camps in Cyprus following World War II, as well as serving as the Executive Secretary of the Famagusta Shopkeepers' Association and acting as a local correspondent for the party newspaper, Dimokratis.

Following the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Flourentzos became a refugee and settled in Limassol, where he continued to be active in various social movements. The AKEL statement reflected on his long life and deep connection to the people of Famagusta, noting that he lived a life full of contributions to his community.
