Cyprus Minister of Transport reviews progress and costs for Paphos-Polis Chrysochous highway

Cyprus Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, has initiated an informal review of construction costs for the second phase of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous highway, specifically the segment from Stroumbi to Polis. Seeking to protect taxpayer funds, the Minister consulted industry experts to establish benchmark costs per kilometer and determine if contractor bids are inflated, noting that the estimated cost for this phase is approximately €100 million.

On July 30, 2026, Minister Vafeades held a coordination meeting in Paphos with regional stakeholders to address the tender process for the project’s second section. The session focused on synchronizing various state agencies to identify potential bureaucratic bottlenecks and implement strategies for acceleration. The Minister emphasized that while citizens have been waiting for the project for two decades, the government remains committed to its completion despite existing public skepticism.

The current focus remains on refining the tender process. The Ministry aims to avoid the common delays associated with complex public infrastructure projects by monitoring all stages of procedural development, with the Minister aiming to expedite the construction timeline as a personal priority.
