Mass migrant influx into Spanish enclave of Ceuta

Thousands of migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on July 30, 2026, by climbing over border fences and swimming from Morocco. This mass crossing follows the arrival of over 1,500 migrants in the previous week, putting significant pressure on the enclave, which is one of the only two land borders between the European Union and Africa. During the chaotic influx, at least one person died, and local authorities noted that the scale of the arrivals exceeded the capacity of local police forces.

In response to the escalating crisis, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ordered the deployment of 60 military personnel to assist the national police in securing the border. Authorities are currently managing the situation as the influx continues. The migrants, largely composed of young men and teenagers, were observed chanting in support of Spain as they bypassed border controls, with some using swimming gear such as flippers and wetsuits to reach the territory. Ceuta's regional head, Juan Jesus Vivas, had previously called on the central government to take decisive action to ensure the safety and security of the area.
