Parent sentenced in Georgia school shooting case

In September 2024, a 16-year-old student carried out a deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, killing two students and two teachers while wounding nine others. Following the tragedy, the teenager was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His father, 55-year-old Colin Gray, has now been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and child cruelty charges.

The investigation revealed that Colin Gray had gifted his son the AR-15 assault rifle used in the attack as a Christmas present in 2023, despite prior concerns regarding the boy’s mental health and previous threats of school violence. Evidence showed that the weapon was kept in the teenager's room and remained easily accessible. This landmark case serves as one of the first instances in the United States where a parent has faced criminal prosecution for a school shooting committed by their child.

During the sentencing, Judge Nicholas Prim emphasized the father's failure to provide proper parental oversight. The conviction and sentencing underscore the growing national debate regarding gun storage practices and the extent of legal responsibility for parents in cases of youth-perpetrated gun violence.
