An analysis by Reuters revealed that the map image contained a watermark suggesting it was generated using an OpenAI artificial intelligence tool. OpenAI has not provided a comment on the matter. The State Department has accepted full responsibility for the incident, attributing the error to a staff member who hastily modified the presentation slides shortly before the event. Participants at the conference photographed the errors and shared them widely across social media platforms, drawing further attention to the lapse.

The U.S. currently maintains a military presence with hundreds of troops stationed in Nigeria, making the geographical misrepresentation particularly notable.
