Death toll from Chongqing landslide rises to 51

The death toll from the massive landslide that struck the city of Chongqing in southwestern China on July 17 has risen to 51, according to recent updates. Following the initial incident, where 11 bodies were identified, DNA testing on remains recovered from the wreckage of crushed buildings and vehicles has significantly increased the confirmed fatality count. While earlier reports suggested 50 people were missing, updated information indicates that 10 individuals remain unaccounted for, and search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

The disaster occurred during an emergency evacuation ordered after a worker spotted falling rocks. Despite the order to relocate, a major landslide struck while the evacuation was in progress, burying at least 10 buildings. More than 1,100 residents have been displaced from their homes due to the destruction and fears of subsequent ground instability. Authorities continue to monitor the area for further geological risks while operations to locate the missing persist.
