EDEK sets date for leadership election
The Central Committee of the Cypriot party EDEK has formally confirmed that the election for a new party president will take place on September 5, 2026. This decision, ratified during a meeting on July 30, follows proposals submitted by the party's Political Bureau on July 22. The process is being conducted in accordance with the party's statutes to ensure the legal replacement of the presidency.
As the party moves toward these elections, the submission of candidacies was scheduled for the first week of August. Sofia Christodoulou, the president of the EDEK Youth organization, has become the first to officially announce her candidacy. In her statement, she emphasized the need for unity, credibility, and the renewal of the party, calling for the younger generation to take a leading role in the movement's restructuring.
While other figures such as former MEP and Defense Minister Kyriakos Mavronikolas and Marios Hannidis have been mentioned in media reports as potential candidates, their participation remains speculative. The party currently faces a challenging period, as it works to fulfill the mandates of its recent Extraordinary Congress while preparing for the upcoming ballot.
