Migrant crisis in Spanish enclave of Ceuta

Beginning on July 30, 2026, the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta experienced an unprecedented surge of migrants arriving from Morocco. Over 50,000 individuals crossed the border by land and sea within 48 hours, overwhelming local security and humanitarian resources. By Sunday, August 2, officials reported that at least 72 people had died, with local morgues holding 88 bodies awaiting identification. While more than 48,000 migrants voluntarily returned to Morocco, the event placed extreme pressure on the enclave, which has a population of approximately 83,600.

In response, the Spanish government deployed military units, specialized police, and naval assets to secure the territory. Authorities installed a 500-metre floating barrier off the Tarajal breakwater to deter further sea crossings. The crisis also incited diplomatic friction with Italy, as Italian officials suggested suspending Spain from the Schengen Area, leading to a summoning of the Italian ambassador by Madrid. Security operations continue in Ceuta, involving the detention of remaining migrants for identification and potential deportation. The surge followed a recent Supreme Court ruling that restricted the immediate return of migrants intercepted at sea.
