Police conduct series of island-wide crime prevention operations

Between July 31 and August 4, 2026, the Cyprus Police conducted a series of intensive, island-wide preventive operations aimed at maintaining public order and increasing community safety. These efforts involved increased patrols at key urban locations and targeted inspections of both vehicles and business premises. Depending on the specific night, the number of arrests varied significantly, ranging from 10 to 19 individuals, for offenses including drug possession, illegal residence in the Republic, assault, kidnapping, and various traffic violations.

Throughout the operations, thousands of citizens were stopped and questioned. Statistical data fluctuated across reports; for example, vehicle inspections ranged between 440 and 686, while premises inspections were consistently reported between 37 and 67 per operation. Traffic enforcement was a major component, with hundreds of citations issued, many involving speeding, alcohol consumption, and driving under the influence. In one instance, 389 traffic charges were recorded with 98 speeding violations, while other reports noted 118 speeding cases. Police also detained various vehicles for further inspection during these nightly crackdowns.

Authorities stated that these preventative operations are ongoing to curb delinquency and serious crime. Police continue to carry out targeted controls and operational actions daily to maintain security across urban centers, with investigative proceedings following for those arrested for criminal and traffic-related offenses.
