Cabinet reshuffle in Cyprus delayed as negotiations conclude

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides is finalizing a significant cabinet reshuffle to strengthen his administration's center-right political base. While official announcements were initially expected on July 31, 2026, the process was delayed after a potential appointee requested additional time to consider the offer. The reshuffle is set to incorporate several new faces and internal role changes, with a focus on increasing the participation of the Democratic Party (DIKO) and the Democratic Rally (DISY).

Key changes reportedly include the appointment of Tina Pavlou as Minister of Health, replacing Neophytos Charalambides, who is expected to move to the Ministry of Transport, succeeding the departing Alexis Vafeades. Other anticipated appointments include Christos Senekis as Minister of Agriculture and Evi Tsolaki as Deputy Minister of Social Welfare. Additionally, Clea Papaellina is expected to transition from Social Welfare to the Deputy Ministry of Culture. Four government members—Alexis Vafeades, Maria Panayiotou, Kostas Koumis, and Vasiliki Kassianidou—are expected to exit the cabinet.

Internal disagreements occurred within DIKO regarding the extent of the party's cabinet participation, with party leader Nikolas Papadopoulos ultimately failing to secure support for his proposal for a more extensive increase in ministerial positions. The administration aims to finalize these changes, which are considered crucial for the remainder of the president's five-year term leading up to the 2028 elections.
