Cypriot football clubs face financial sanctions and tax account seizures
Several Cypriot first-division football clubs are at risk of having their bank accounts frozen and assets seized due to outstanding tax debts. The clubs have until the end of August to settle their arrears in accordance with a repayment schedule approved by the Council of Ministers in 2023. Failure to meet these financial obligations will result in the activation of statutory penalties, involving a total debt amounting to several hundred thousand euros.
Despite this impending crisis, the affected clubs had been making regular payments until May. This compliance previously allowed them to secure necessary certifications from UEFA, enabling their participation in both domestic championships and European football competitions. The sudden lapse in payments now jeopardizes their standing. The clubs currently have a window of at least four weeks to fulfill their obligations to the Tax Department before the threatened sanctions are enforced.
