UK funeral director sentenced to 20 years for desecration of bodies

On July 31, 2026, Robert Bush, a 48-year-old funeral director in Hull, England, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Bush, who operated the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors firm, pleaded guilty to offenses spanning 12 years, during which he stored human remains in horrific, decomposing conditions instead of burying or cremating them. Police discovery of the premises in March 2024 revealed 31 bodies in refrigerators that should have been cremated months prior, including that of an infant.

The court heard testimony from approximately 200 grieving relatives over five days. Judge Nicholas Hilliard noted that Bush prioritized his own enrichment by defrauding vulnerable customers and failing to treat the deceased with dignity. Beyond the storage issues, Bush was found to have handed out the ashes of unknown individuals to families, meaning many clients remain uncertain if they received the correct remains of their loved ones. The judge emphasized that the sentence cannot undo the profound damage caused by the defendant's actions over the past decade.
