Famagusta criminal court convicts 20-year-old for 2024 attempted murder and rape
On July 31, 2026, the Famagusta Criminal Court found a 20-year-old man guilty of attempted murder, rape, and assault causing actual bodily harm. The crimes occurred on August 31, 2024, at a hotel in the Famagusta district. The court determined that after meeting at a nightclub, the defendant attacked the 26-year-old victim at her hotel room when she refused to consent to sexual intercourse. He then raped her while she was unconscious and left her, believing she was dead.
The victim was hospitalized in an intensive care unit for 48 hours and remained under medical care for several more days. The court's verdict relied on forensic evidence, DNA analysis, CCTV footage, and witness testimony, explicitly rejecting the defendant's account as unreliable. Sentencing is scheduled to take place at a future hearing date.
