Protest planned against British Base antenna installation in Akrotiri

The Kourion Municipality has organized a protest march against the installation of antennas by the British Bases in the Akrotiri municipal district. The event is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, starting at 09:30 from the first entrance of the Akrotiri district. The mobilization is supported by the Akrotiri Merra Committee, the 'Akrotiri Zero Hour' movement, and various local community groups.

The public reaction follows reports regarding plans to install 32 permanent antennas within the British Bases area, a project projected to affect an area of approximately 340 skala. Residents and local authorities have expressed deep concerns regarding potential impacts on public health, the local environment, and their quality of life. In response, the Kourion Municipality has requested a new epidemiological study and comprehensive briefings on the scope of the project.

This dispute has historical roots, with tensions over British Base installations dating back to 2001. As the municipality continues to evaluate its legal options, local officials have called for peaceful and responsible participation in the march as a display of unity and determination to protect the region's interests.
