Cargo vessel struck in the Strait of Hormuz

A series of maritime incidents has escalated in the Strait of Hormuz since late July 2026. On July 31, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard reported striking two tankers escorted by U.S. forces, claiming they deviated from approved routes. Subsequently, several other vessels reported projectile strikes or explosions near Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, including an incident approximately 20 nautical miles from Al Khasab.

The most serious incident occurred on August 3 at 22:00 UTC, involving the Liberia-flagged dry cargo vessel Minoan Pioneer, managed by the Greek company Modion Maritime Management. The ship was struck in the engine room by an unidentified projectile, causing a fire in the crew quarters. While the crew reportedly abandoned the vessel, one sailor remains missing. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the attack, while regional security remains under high alert due to the strategic importance of the waterway for global energy shipments.
